Singer-songwriter Graywave (Jess Webberley) was one of my favourite new artists of 2020 and this year looks to be a promising one for her with the release of her debut EP, “Planetary Shift”.

This is the second single from the upcoming EP, the first being “Like Heaven” which blew me away when released last month. She not only has serious songwriting talent but there is something so rousing about her voice that I can’t quite put my finger on.
“Before” has an air of mystery weaved within the complex instrumental tracks. The single tackles the subject of anxiety which is evident by the lyrics and the use of musical style. When talking about the song she said that it “was a way to express how I feel when I get particularly anxious and start thinking about all the negatives in my life and the world – expressing that through lyrics and music really helped me deal with it.”
The track opens with a melancholic repeated guitar line, which loops throughout. A strong bass line and sporadic but cool drum sequence is layered on before Webberley’s soul-stirring vocals come in to guide you through her thoughts and emotions. It then builds into something bigger, louder, with her singing the choral hook, “like before”. Almost screaming.
This eruption of sound is a force to be reckoned with and makes an already great single even better. I immediately loved it on the first listen and enjoyed having it on repeat whilst writing this post.
An honest song, coming from the heart, which makes me look forward to the EP.
Today she announced the good news of joining the False Peak Records roster which is great news and will help her grow further as an artist.
