This review was written for Indie Midlands.
The atmosphere at The Sunflower Lounge was cheery and upbeat as people waited for their Saturday night entertainment to begin. Drinks already flowing and a lot of chatter so I knew I was in for a good evening.
Kicking off the night was singer-songwriter Demi Marriner. From “One Way Conversation” to “Little Boy” the folk singer had me captivated by her stunning vocals and accomplished guitar playing. She certainly had me hanging onto every word. My favourite track was “Distorted Desires” as I found it was one I could personally really relate to. She was the perfect, friendly face to start things off.
Next was four-piece rock band Estate who I thoroughly enjoyed. They are a band who had everything worked out during their performance. They’ve not only got some really awesome tracks like “Summer Nights” and “Forgiveness” with thumping drums and cool guitar riffs but also some brilliant humour in-between songs. The chemistry which binds them is evident. Their new track, “I’m Losing Myself”, has a catchy opening riff and some interesting drum bars which are very original. I would definitely see them again. Their debut EP, “I Was There” is out next month.
There were a few fans about for Birmingham rock-pop band The Fauna. The four-piece have a soft indie rock sound with sweet vocals sung by a very charismatic frontman. He played his acoustic guitar delicately which contrasted nicely to the harsher electric. I really enjoyed their first single, “Love You A Different Way” in particular but they played a range of tracks all of which had their merits. Their latest single, “Hiding Something” is no different.
With demo copies of their “Way Out” EP on the merch table already set out the pop-rock band, Highlite, were ready to put on a show. Their awesome guitar riffs blended with brilliant vocals – including top harmonies – is a perfect recipe. They were very uplifting. The crowd were very involved throughout the set from clapping along to “If You See” to singing the opening to “Flux” it really was great to see such a great reception. Their single “Sleepless Nights” has not long been name BBC Introducing track of the week and next month they are BBC Introducing Coventry & Warwickshire’s band of the month! Massive. It is truly deserved as they are definitely a band with a future – they are one to watch.
